Last sketch series, today was a partly cloudy day, not allowing much light in the space. This photo was taken around 1 pm where the sun is beginning to peak in on this side. The glare is the worst at the actual window, it has made a strong pattern on the floor. Overall from this exercise, i was able to notice the light patterns and see how it changes throughout the day.

This photo was taken around 2 pm. The light pattern is beginning to stretch at an angle. I find it interesting to notice that there are two different light shadows, one less noticeable. Notice the glares on the actual window, very bright! Over the course of the day, the angle will increase coming closer to us as the sun rotates.

Proximity Hotel

What a great field trip to the Proximity Hotel. This was the first time i had visited and was amazed by how elegant and beautiful the interiors of this space is. We toured the place, paying attention to the lighting fixture and other features about how "green" this hotel is. These photos show different lighting fixtures used throughout the hotel. From using natural daylighting in the rooms, electric candles as wall art, illuminated signs and overhead lighting, this hotel met all LEED credits creating the "greenest" hotel in the world, right here in Greensboro, NC.

This photo was taken around 1 pm. It was an overcast day allowing not much light into the space. The windows are able to place some shadows on the floor but not as noticed as in previous photos. The light is reflected off the table more than the floor, which i would think of because of the material change, which directs eyes toward object, rather than floor.

d)it brightens the top of the space but is not very bright around the countertops. The lighting is not directed in a right location to treat the whole space.
e)light is directed at the cabinets as if it is highlighting them. Also the daylight helps bring natural light in the space
f)the lights reflect off the shiny painted cabinets and also reflects off the ceiling. It produces glares on the countertops as well.
g)i think it works well in this space. The kitchen is not too lit and not too dim
h)by adding recessed lighting under the countertops, it would help bring light to the lower end of the space.

d)used to add accent lighting in an unusual way. It is very unique and makes a interesting effect to this space. The lighting is shining above and below the lamp

f)the light bounces off the wood paneling and the concrete floors
g)i think that it looks dumb with the fluorescent lamps on the wall. It serves no purpose.
h)add lighting that will illuminate the whole space rather than placed on a wall. Overhead lighting is a more effective way to use light in this space.

e)these lights are very bright and directs your attention to the location and makes you focus on the object.
f)i feel like these lights are too bright for the space, the glare and reflectivity is harsh to the eyes and should be toned down
g)should not be used in an office environment, but somewhere that has plenty of space for light to shine, it is too confined here

b)ambient lighting is used to illuminate the surrounding area
c)recessed lighting and a large cove lighting area are the main lamps used in this space
d)should be used in moderation to accentuate details or for soft general lighting in coves and wall slots in applications where curvilinear architectural forms and detailing are prominent and affordable dimmability and/or color are required.
e)the recessed lighting directs downward focusing on the ground, the large cove lighting is used more as a focal point and does not influence the surroundings as well as the recessed.
f)the carpet retains the light, when the light is direct on the walls, it reflects and bounces elsewhere. It also looks like metal is the ceiling material, which provide alot of reflectivity.
g)this space is too bright for this area, because people will be coming out of dark rooms and you don't want to blind them when walking out, it would work better in the lobby.
h)dimming the lights or not having so many will help, also incorporating materials that will absorb light so it does not reflect other places.

Taken around 4 pm, this picture shows the light stretching along the floor. The longer the shadow, the later the day is, as i have observed. The angle of the light has changed since 2/14, having shorter distances. When in this space, during late afternoon, this space is very bright and blinds the eyes.

Daylight Model

We control the day-lighting by setting the orientation where the gathering space is on the east and the intimate space on the west side. The wall with no cutouts is facing the north side. We did this so the sun would penetrate the building through the L shaped cut outs, because this is a more active space where more complex daylight should be present. We avoided direct sunlight to keep from obscuring the views of the people using the space, not creating glare.

Daylight Model Inspiration

We chose to study the product design of Steven Holl and explore the ways he showed light through his works. In many of his works, he makes several small cutouts that creates a pattern on the object it reflects onto. He intersects different planes that all have cutouts on them to create an image that reflects onto a surface. We used the idea to create an active, lively space on the gathering side of our model. We studied the MIT dorms and drew inspiration from the square cutouts on the facade of the building and incorporated that into the intimate side of our model. Holl uses clean lines to create geometric shapes in his works and design which is what we took as inspiration for this project.

In this store, the light changes throughout the space. The fabric swatches laying on the blue table have drastic color changes. The colors have a redish glow which is produced from track lighting. The swatches against the black shirt capture light very well since the lighting is directed toward this display, even thought the red looks more orange and the green look like yellow. The last photo was taken on a white shirt and contains most of the original colors. With these three locations, the light changes in particular areas depending on the light source and how much output it puts on a surface.

Light sources of fluorescent in the kitchen and incandescent for the other two locations, brings similar results. Even though I have two different light sources, all my fabric swatches look very similar. In the living room, the light is also affected by the daylight that brightens the fabric swatches. The colors are darker than original color due to the fact that the light is not directed to that particular area.

These three images are taken in different locations of the grocery store, showing the differences light can do to a material. the locations are a freezer, a open cooler and an aisle. Strips of LED lighting is the light source for the image in the freezer,making the colors dark and dull. In the open cooler, fluorescent lighting is used as the light source and brightens the fabric swatches. You can also tell where the light shines and where it doesn't from the shadow. HID lighting is the overhead light source for the aisle image which makes the fabrics intensify, making them more vibrant.

Located in two different places in the space, one on a bookshelf and the other on the floor. Both being exposed to the fluorescent lighting, came out with different results. The swatches on the bookshelf are bright and look like the original color. When on the floor, the colors appear dark and vibrant, changing the location below a few feet make a huge difference in this space.

I took this picture after church around noon. Since the sun is shining over the building, the patterns have yet been created in my space. There are marks beginning to form on the floor that suggest some of the sun is coming in. Without the sun shining in the windows, it is dark in the space which makes artificial lighting needed. The sunlight helps bring in a significant amount of light into this space as observed in the past weeks.

Sketch Series #2::Shane's Rib Shack

Shane's Rib Shack located on Battleground, is mainly lit by recessed lighting throughout the space. The recessed lighting is placed in no particular order, and seems random throughout the space. Within one side of the restaurant, pendent lighting is used in booth areas, which gives more light to this section. This area causes glares and maybe too bright since a couple of light sources are directed in such a small space. The order area uses track lighting to direct light to the menu and also to the cash register. Some of the recessed lighting is used as spotlights in the back of the restaurant, highlighting the history of Shane's, which directs your attention to it. Also around the bathroom area, you are able to see the direct lighting effects on the wall which brings the idea of a lower ceiling, since the ceiling is painted black and disappears. Daylight is also an important light source throughout the day, because the exterior walls is mostly glass. The lighting in this space is ideal for a restaurant, by having enough light to eat and then get out, not making you want to stay there for very long.

Pacsun located in Four Seasons Mall, uses track lighting throughout the store as its main light source. The track lighting is positioned to be directed on clothing displayed in the store. Most of the lighting is directed to a certain article of clothing or has a specific place to project light. At the cash wrap, there is a large wood veneer light, that I feel is more for looks than function, but it directs the attention of the customer to come and check-out. Also in the back of the store, there are two round wood veneer lights that direct the customer to the sales rack. Both of these lights are interesting and fits the store's atmosphere well, they are used more for direction and way finding in the space rather than light output. This space does have glare issues, dealing with too many lights shining on a certain items, also shining on materials such as metal throughout the space. Decreasing the amount of lights directing towards one area will help solve the problem and make it more appealing to shop in there. With lights everywhere in the space, it makes dark areas from the shadows of the clothes rack, display signs, and furniture/props. I find that this space is too bright, but since this is a clothes store, you want to make customers aware of the clothing and want them to buy items.

Sketch Series #2::Weatherspoon Art Museum

This space is located in the 2nd floor large art gallery located in the Weatherspoon Museum. Track lighting is used throughout the whole space with no other additional fixtures. The lights are positioned depending on the art and how the light should hit the composition. Most of the lights are directed to certain artworks whereas others are not directed to art but the space as a whole. We talked to the security guard and he discussed how the light designer positions every light in the space for each art exhibit, using large scaffolding equipment to reach the lights. I never thought of lighting having to be moved many times to achieve the correct look such as in this room, but reminds me of the technical aspect of lighting design. The way the lights are directed, I do not feel like glare is an issue in this space. From looking at the pictures, it seems as if this art gallery is too bright but when experiencing it first hand, I did not feel overwhelmed. The design of the ceiling is unusual with the insets where lights are located and are divided in sections which might have to deal with the glare/brightness. I feel that the lighting in this space is very effective, it lights the space and directs the attention to the artwork.

This photograph is taken around 4 p.m, where the pattern has changed. Throughout the day the pattern on the floor gets longer and affects the space more. Also this picture was taken later than the first and you can see that the pattern changes angle throughout the day. By taking pictures at different times, I think I will find a greater success observing daylight.

Computer Lab Evaluation

We chose to analyze the lighting of the computer lab. This is primarily used by students when working on IARC projects. It is accessible 24 hours a day and used for certain projects, programs, research and a classroom for students of all years. The lighting is very bright and hurts the eyes when in there for too long. There are 23 suspended fluorescent lights which seem to be too many for such a small space. The space is both public and intimate in different ways. When having class, you are seating closely to one another which makes this a more intimate space. But the space is also used by many people at different times and can accommodate groups. This space is not the best place to do computer work; the glare on the computers is sometimes distracting. If all possible, I do not use the computer lab, the lighting is too bright for a work environment.

These lights are designed to be focal points in a space. They are creative and distinctive, giving a space characteristics. I love these lights and would want them in my house (well at least the white one, the red one is rather large).

Kaleidoscope Light Model

In this exercise, we created an interior space that would function as a night club. In this space we played with lighting to create a pattern and texture on the walls around the space. We placed a large diamond on top of a red transparent tube. We then used an LED light to shine from within the tube projecting through the diamond. We did this same thing with three other small diamonds and blue transparent tubes with tea lights. We varied the heights of all the tubes to see what this effect would have. We discovered that the light shining through the diamonds created a kaleidoscope type pattern along the walls, but mainly the ceiling. The blue and red tubes combine to make a magenta tint along the walls. We folded paper in the corner along the back wall with a tea light placed behind it to help create texture. The colors from the tube mixed with the tea light behind the paper mix to create an orange glow.

Light Series #1::January 31st 2009

I chose to do my sketch series at my church's fellowship hall. There are these windows that are rectangular, about 18 inches wide and 7 feet tall. They are placed approximately every 4 feet throughout this space. This picture is taken around 2p.m. showing the daylight pattern on the floor. Having windows on the west side of the building, makes it hard to have social gathering with this harsh daylight coming in. It adds light into the space without using other lighting fixtures but during the day it is not pleasant working in this environment.
